Schrijven over ziekte en gezondheid

Tijdens dit programma draagt Anne Boyer voor uit haar Pulitzer-prijswinnende memoir Het onsterven (2021, The Undying) en haar recente poëziebundels. Ook gaat ze in gesprek met Anna Poletti, universitair hoofddocent Engelse taal en cultuur (Universiteit Utrecht) en Nadia de Vries, schrijver en criticus.

Anne Boyer is dichter en essayist. Haar nieuwste boek, Het onsterven (2020, vertaald door Henny Corver), werd in 2020 bekroond met de Pulitzerprijs voor algemene non-fictie. Daarnaast won ze in 2018 zowel de Cy Twombly-poëzieprijs als een Whiting Award in de categorie poëzie. Eerder schreef ze onder meer A Handbook of Disappointed Fate (2018), verschillende poëziebundels en Garments Against Women (2015), waarmee ze een CLMP Firecracker-prijs in de wacht sleepte. Ze werd geboren en groeide op in Kansas, Texas. Momenteel werkt ze als poëzieredacteur voor de New York Times Magazine en geeft ze les aan de Universiteit van St. Andrews in Schotland.                                             

Nadia de Vries is dichter en schrijver. Haar debuutroman De bakvis (2022) stond op de longlist van de Libris Literatuur Prijs en de Boekenbon Literatuurprijs. Daarnaast schreef ze drie Engelstalige dichtbundels, Dark Hour (2018), I failed to swoon (2021) en Know Thy Audience (2023). In Kleinzeer (2020) onderzoekt ze ten slotte de onzichtbare wereld van ziekte (van kinderleukemie tot depressie). Haar tweede roman verschijnt in 2024.

Anna Poletti is hoofddocent Engelse taal en cultuur aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Zij is auteur van Stories of the Self: Life Writing After the Book (2020). Daarnaast leverde ze een bijdrage aan Graphic Medicine, een publicatie die tot stand kwam uit een samenwerking tussen stripkunstenaars en academici binnen de domeinen schrijven, literatuur en strips.

Writing about Illness and health

In this program, open to the public, Anne Boyer will read from her Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir The Undying and her recent poetry. She will also engage in a conversation with Anna Poletti, associate professor of English Language and Culture (Utrecht University), and Nadia de Vries, writer and critic.

Anne Boyer is a poet and essayist. Her most recent book, The Undying, won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in General Non-fiction. She was also the inaugural winner of the 2018 Cy Twombly Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and winner of the 2018 Whiting Award in nonfiction/poetry. Her books include A Handbook of Disappointed Fate as well as several books of poetry, including the 2016 CLMP Firecracker Award–winning Garments Against Women. She was born and raised in Kansas, and was educated in its public schools and libraries. She is currently the poetry editor for the New York Times Magazine and teaches at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Nadia de Vries is a writer and critic from Amsterdam. She is the author of the English-language poetry collections Dark Hour (2018), I Failed to Swoon (2021), and Know They Audience (2023). She also writes in Dutch and is the author of the memoir Kleinzeer (2020), which describes the invisible world of illness (ranging from childhood leukemia to adult depression), and the fiction novel De bakvis (2022).

Anna Poletti is Associate Professor of English Language and Culture at Utrecht University. They are the author of Stories of the Self: Life Writing After the Book (2020). They also recently co-edited Graphic Medicine, a publication which brings together comics artists and scholars of life writing, literature, and comics.
