Around the world, writers are being intimidated, books banned and critical voices silenced. In the U.S., so called “offensive” novels are disappearing from school libraries, including even The Diary of Anne Frank. In Hungary, bookstores are being fined for visibly displaying LGBTQ books. In Afghanistan, Sudan and Russia, writers disappear behind bars - or worse. Even in the Netherlands we are not immune to intolerance against free speech: nearly two in ten writers in the Netherlands experience aggression, authors face threats and hate campaigns, and trust in the democratic rule of law is eroding.
