A Litany For Survival - the Life and Work of Audre Lorde offers a powerful sketch of the life of Caribbean-American Audre Lorde (1934 - 1992), from her youth in Harlem, New York to her fatal struggle with breast cancer. The documentary features interviews with Adrienne Rich, Sapphire, and Sonia Sanchez, who all emphasise the impact Audre Lorde has had on their lives and her broader impact on society.

You can buy tickets for this film on the website of the Slachtstraat.

As a Black lesbian feminist and activist, in the 1970s and ‘80s Lorde participated in the debate on the emancipation of women of colour and the social justice movements in the United States.  During her life, she published countless poetry collections and several books. The documentary shows the impact that Audre Lorde had on her environment as an activist, but also as a lecturer. This evening’s film links her life and work to the Civil Rights movement, the women’s liberation movement and the gay- and lesbian movement.

The documentary will be introduced by Warda El-Kaddouri, who has published articles about Audre Lorde’s contemporary relevance in De Groene Amsterdammer.

The film is 79 minutes long. The films are in English, without subtitles. The introduction is in Dutch.
