Regisseur Daviel Shy's experimentele verfilming uit 2017 laat zien hoe tijdloos dit verhaal is, door gebruik te maken van drag-elementen, een zine-y esthetiek voelt The Ladies Almanack helemaal van nu. Voeg daar de voice-over van de iconische Franse feministische schrijver Hélène Cixous aan toe, en je hebt een must-see film te pakken.
Hasret Emine leidt de film in met fluisters uit het duister van de jaren 20 - de huidige jaren 20, niet die van de vorige eeuw - in de stijl van de salons uit Parijs. Denk aan contemporary queer gossip verworven in een scandalous zine, irrelevant en chaotisch - net zoals de film (zeggen de haters).
Djuna Barnes werd recentelijk voor het voetlicht gebracht door uitgeverij Orlando, die 'dat andere meesterwerk' uitgaf: Nachtwoud. Deze uitgave is opgenomen in de lenteselectie van Schwob.
