Het programma: vijf urgente thema's van onze tijd

Dit jaar presenteren wij de thema's Never Again is Now, Chorus of Many, Woman, Life, Freedom, Nature's Narrative en The Fragility of Freedom.

Never Again is Now

Het is anno 2025 onmogelijk om een literair festival te organiseren zonder aandacht te besteden aan een van de grootste humanitaire en morele crises van deze tijd. Terwijl de wereld toekijkt, voltrekt zich in Gaza een afschuwelijke tragedie. Onder de titel Never Again Is Now geven we ruimte aan stemmen die zich uitspreken over de genocide op de Palestijnen, en die ons een nieuwe blik aanreiken op trauma, herdenken en rouwen. Wat betekent ‘never again’ eigenlijk nog, als de parallellen tussen verleden en heden zich zo scherp aftekenen? Via essays, romans, pamfletten en persoonlijke verhalen laten auteurs Isabella Hammad, Maurits de Bruijn, Gaël Faye, Omar el Akkad en Sinan Çankaya zien wat literatuur wel en niet vermag in tijden van humanitaire crisis. Chorus of Many

Chorus of Many draait geheel om veelstemmigheid en perspectief. We zijn verheugd dat Safae el Khannoussi en Houria Bouteldja elkaar spreken op ons podium: zij verbinden beiden in hun werk de postkoloniale blik met het hedendaagse Europa, en laten de onderdrukte stemmen luid klinken. Maar we benaderen het onderwerp ook vanuit verteltechnisch oogpunt: Natasha Brown en Herman Koch laten ons zien hoe satire kan worden ingezet om een maatschappelijk probleem aan de kaak te stellen, zonder te preken. Zij schreven allebei een slimme parodie op de literaire wereld, dus laat dat Droste-effect maar komen. Lees meer over dit thema

Woman, Life, Freedom

In deze programmalijn (vernoemd naar de leus van de Iraanse vrouwenbeweging) brengen we schrijvers samen die de wereld door een feministisch vergrootglas bevragen, vaak tegen de klippen op. Met o.a. Bregje Hofstede en de Mexicaanse schrijver Jazmina Barrera, die in haar prachtige moederschapsmemoires Linea Negra laat zien dat het persoonlijke altijd politiek is, en een gesprek tussen de Groenlandse schrijver Naja Marie Aidt en Zweedse schrijver Johanne Lykke Holm, over geweld, vrouw-zijn en de troost die vrouwenvriendschap kan bieden. Jantine Jongebloed, Rodante van der Waal en Sanne Thierens gaan in gesprek over abortus, zelfbeschikking en ‘obstetrisch geweld’. Tijdens een live-opname van de Fixditpodcastserie Lange lijnen spreekt Rachida Lamrabet tot slot met jonge letterkundigen Maria van Dordrecht en Iris Kater Mirsalari over haar roman Vertel het iemand. Nature's Narrative

De trouwe ILFU-bezoeker herkent dit thema nog van de gelijknamige festivaldag vorig jaar. Een groot succes, en we zijn nog lang niet uitgepraat over de stem, de rechten en de positie van de natuur, zowel in de literatuur als daarbuiten. In programma's met Sunil Amrith, Roxane van Iperen, Bibi Dumon Tak, Tijl Nuyts en Arita Baaijens vragen we ons af hoe de natuur haar verhaal vertelt, en of wij daar als mensen eigenlijk wel naar kunnen luisteren. The Fragility of Freedom

In deze programma’s onderzoeken we hoe vrijheid afbrokkelt als het systeem begint te wankelen of als het systeem haar greep juist verstevigt. We zijn verheugd met de komst van Paul Lynch, die in Het lied van de profeet zo angstaanjagend goed laat zien hoe je als individu overeind blijft als het systeem je wil vermorzelen. Met de Albanese Lea Ypi gaan we in gesprek over de thema's uit haar nieuwe boek Onwaardig, en Clarice Gargard geeft een performatieve lezing naar aanleiding van haar boek Na verzet komt (r)evolutie. Over Exploring Stories

Exploring Stories is in 2021 ontstaan uit ILFU's overtuiging dat verhalen, fictie en literatuur ons meer over de wereld kunnen vertellen – en ons die beter doen begrijpen – dan het volgen van talkshows, BN’ers en influencers. De wisselwerking tussen literatuur en maatschappij staat bij Exploring Stories centraal, met speciale aandacht voor de manier waarop romans en verhalen inzicht bieden in onze wereld. Door gebruik te maken van hun verbeelding, helpen schrijvers ons ons wereldbeeld te doorgronden, aan te vullen, te corrigeren of totaal op z’n kop te zetten.

During the fifth edition of Exploring Stories, on September 27th, ILFU will bring together exceptional writers and thinkers from around the globe. In TivoliVredenburg's four stages the audience can meet their favourite authors, discover new voices, and find inspiration in their literary perspective on the world.

The themes

This year the following themes will be highlighted throughout the programme: Never Again is Now, Chorus of Many, Woman, Life, Freedom, Nature's Narrative and The Fragility of Freedom. 

Never Again is Now

In 2025, it is impossible to organise a literary festival without acknowledging one of the greatest humanitarian and moral crises of our time. As the world watches, a horrifying tragedy unfolds in Gaza. Writers, readers, thinkers – in other words, all of us – cannot and will not look away.

Under the banner Never Again is Now, the Exploring Stories programme delves into how Dutch and international writers and thinkers grapple with the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. Themes such as memory, responsibility, and resistance are central to this series. What does it mean to say “never again” while witnessing history repeat itself in real time? How do we write about trauma when the trauma hasn’t ended? What does it mean to commemorate if we shut our eyes to the present? Whose voices are we hearing – and whose are being systematically ignored or demonised? Why do so many people avert their gaze from violence that happens “elsewhere”?

Through essays, novels, pamphlets and personal testimonies, writers Gaël Faye, Isabella Hammad, Maurits de Bruijn, Omar El Akkad and Sinan Çankaya explore what literature can – and crucially, cannot – do in times of humanitarian crisis. They remind us that literature is not innocent. They search for language to name the unbearable, pose questions where politics remains silent, and confront us with uncomfortable truths about identity, history, and complicity.

With Never Again is Now, we create space for urgent conversations about what we remember, what we choose not to see, and what meaning, if any, “never again” still has in a time when history’s darkest patterns are once again unfolding.

Chorus of Many

In every society, there is a chorus of voices, but not everyone is heard equally. Some stories find their way into parliament, talk shows, and schoolbooks. Others remain on the margins, untold, or told but unheard. In the Chorus of Many program line, we explore how our attention is divided, and hopefully discover what happens when the less heard voices do make themselves heard. We hope to muffle the noise of the majority so that we can truly listen to stories that sound like (new) music to our ears.

Under the theme Chorus of Many, you can also hear the necessary “irritating” voices. Disturbing sounds that force us to listen to what we would rather not hear. Like the cawing of a pigeon that disturbs our urban tranquility—but of course, the pigeon is not just a pigeon, the pigeon is a symbol for everything we have pushed to the margins. Does this sound cryptic? Then be sure to come and listen.

Writers Safae el Khannoussi and Houria Bouteldja show us what happens if you shift your perspective, when you listen to voices that are rarely invited to join in the chorus. Natasha Brown and Herman Koch talk about the power of fiction and satire to talk about power and privilege.

Woman, Life, Freedom

In this theme (named after the slogan of the Iranian women's movement), we bring together writers who question the world through a feminist lens, often against all odds. Featuring Bregje Hofstede and Mexican writer Jazmina Barrera, who shows in her beautiful maternity memoir Linea Nigra that the personal is always political, and a conversation between Greenlandic writer Naja Marie Aidt and Swedish writer Johanne Lykke Holm about violence, womanhood, and the comfort that female friendship can offer. Jantine Jongebloed, Rodante van der Waal, and Sanne Thierens discuss abortion, self-determination, and “obstetric violence.” Finally, during a live recording of the Fixdit podcast series Lange lijnen, Rachida Lamrabet talks to young literary scholars Jannah Loontjes and Iris Kater Mirsalari about her novel Vertel het iemand.

Nature's Narrative

Regular ILFU visitors will recognize this theme from last year's festival day of the same name. It was a great success, and we are far from finished discussing the voice, rights, and position of nature, both in literature and beyond. In talks with Sunil Amrith, Roxane van Iperen, Bibi Dumon Tak, Tijl Nuyts, and Arita Baaijens, we ask ourselves how nature tells its story, and whether we as humans are actually able to listen to it. The Fragility of Freedom

In these programs, we explore how freedom crumbles when the system begins to falter or when the system tightens its grip. We are delighted to welcome Paul Lynch, who in Prophet Song so terrifyingly well shows how you can survive as an individual when the system wants to crush you. We will talk to Albanian Lea Ypi about the themes in her new book Unworthy, and Clarice Gargard will give a performative lecture based on her book Na verzet komt (r)evolutie. Eva Rovers will give a short lecture following her newest book Waarom we politiek niet alleen aan politici kunnen overlaten, showing the importance of a permanent citizens' assembly to strengthen the democracy.
