This year, ILFU and the City of Utrecht are honoured to present the Belle van Zuylen Ring to Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich, who will travel to Utrecht especially for the event on 28 September. The Ring is an international award recognising a writer’s oeuvre characterised by significant social engagement. Svetlana Alexievich was born in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union. As a writer, she invented an entirely new literary genre, with a constant focus on the ‘little, great people’. In this special programme hosted in collaboration with PEN Nederland, we will discuss the situation in Belarus, writing, and activism – the same themes of the Belle van Zuylen Lecture that Alexievich will give later that day (see later in the programme). Other special guests for the event include writers Franka Hummels and Julia Cimaviejeva (Belarus).
Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma will present the Belle van Zuylen Ring.
Presentation Simone Weimans.
